Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained little new data.
