Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
