Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims First Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev won his first championship for nearly 30 months with success over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament final.

The athlete, a former world number one, has had a challenging year, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

The player's varied form on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in particular - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and ultimately splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently improved in the past month - peaking in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

It is the player's maiden championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hard court since March of 2023.

Victory also means the Russian has secured 21 titles at 21 various competitions.

"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to get a trophy is particularly special," said tennis professional Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the first title I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his past six title deciders, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

His counter-punching play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had prompted commentators to doubt if his ability to play at the top level was over.

However the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and perform assertively, reinforced by an improved serve.

Medvedev came back from a break down in the opening set against the difficult opponent, securing four of the concluding five points to take the lead.

The competitors swapped break points in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his first tour championship, gained dominance to push for a decider.

The opponent saved four early chances in a tight deciding set before the champion won the break to 15 to close out the victory.

Appropriately, the winner secured the win with a point at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to control a return after over two and a half hours.
