Cadillac Utilizes NASA Strategy to Assemble Team from Nothing for Melbourne Grand Prix.

Approximately a full year ago at the Nevada Grand Prix, Cadillac were finally awarded the go-ahead as the world of Formula One's latest participant for 2026. Establishing the team from scratch has required a intense pace of work that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the Apollo moon landing. As the sport descends on the Vegas strip this weekend, Cadillac are aware the deadline is approaching.

The Tight Timeline to Australia

At the last event of the campaign to be held in the United States, with approximately 100 days to go before they hit the circuit for the maiden outing in Melbourne at the 2026 season opener, Cadillac have made significant progress but, in what must seem like a never-ending endeavor, they are conscious there will never be enough hours in the day.

The technical director, Nick Chester, joined the embryonic team in March 2023 soon after it was established, when the team were without even an official entry. He has been at its core ever since and gets a amused expression when reflecting on the ride.

“You can have five minutes reflecting at what you’ve done and go: ‘Incredible, what an achievement what we have built in less than three years,’” he says. “Then the following moment you think: ‘Well, we’ve still got a great deal to do.’”

An Unprecedented Task

Chester achieved victories at the Renault team in Alonso's title-winning campaigns of the mid-2000s and was in command of technical development at the then-new Mercedes electric racing team, but nothing has truly matched the challenge of launching the iconic American Cadillac brand, a factory team supported by the owner, General Motors Corporation, into F1.

“Establishing an F1 team from nothing, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” Chester remarks. “There's nothing comparable. In an well-set team you rarely get the possibility to alter team culture.”

With every day that goes by thoughts are more focused on the impending moment of truth in Melbourne and expectations are being managed.

“It's reasonable to expect that any new team coming in is likely to start at the back but merely participating will be an accomplishment in itself,” the team principal commented earlier this year and while Chester echoed this he felt the team had a point to prove as well.
“The first thing we intend to prove is that we belong on the grid,” he emphasizes. “So that we arrive and we function efficiently. We want to show that we’re a proper team doing the right things on the circuit. Once we prove that we are a legitimate team, then we aim to demonstrate forward movement subsequently.”

Driver Lineup and Recruitment Effort

In the summer they recruited Sergio Perez and Bottas as their drivers for 2026, a tandem remarkable for their priceless expertise in competing at the leading positions in two top-tier teams, Red Bull and Mercedes, and Valtteri Bottas expressed the attitude of fighting spirit.

“Of course, we’re realistic,” Bottas stated. “We have a massive task to do, and it’s going to be almost certainly a challenging beginning, because it is F1. But we aren't joining to remain at the rear. In my view with this setup, with this group, these people, there is every reason that we shouldn’t be able to progress rapidly up to the pace and enjoy some success.”

To realize that ambition recruitment has been in full swing, with personnel now reaching in excess of 400 and planned to reach the objective of 600 members rapidly. In addition to their current base at Silverstone, the organization are in the phase of building an HQ at the Fishers location in the Indianapolis area and there is the GM plant in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are building the plant to manufacture the 2029 engine, set for 2029 – until then they will use power from Ferrari – and the Toyota's wind tunnel in Germany. It is a complex organisation, different from the direction in F1 for more centralization, and has inspired the fresh organizational mindset to which Chester referred to.

NASA Inspiration

“We've drawn heavily from the Apollo program,” said Lowdon shortly before the British GP in July. “We are pragmatic, we understand how challenging it is. The deadlines, are extremely compressed. Well, we aren't launching a lunar mission, but the pressure is comparable.”

So they have implemented, rather than the usual hierarchical system, a non-hierarchical approach similar to that of the space agency's, where there were a variety of Apollo teams all focusing on various components of the program at a different facilities.

“In a system where you follow a procedure where someone has a problem and they report it to their manager, that supervisor communicates with a supervisor in another department, it travels back down, the process is very slow,” says the CTO. “Therefore we enable team members to take charge. Eliminating management approval for everything is far more efficient and more rapid.”

The Future

The success of this agile approach will be tested in the heat of competition when the season begins and there is no little amount at stake for the sport, too. Cadillac have signed as their development driver the emerging Californian Colton Herta
